Portable field balancers compared (2026): Balanset-1A, Erbessd, CEMB, Schenck, Fluke, VMI, Hofmann
I'm obviously biased, so this comparison sticks to what each maker publishes on its own website (links at the end, checked October 2026). Where a maker doesn't publish a number, the table says so. If you spot a mistake, the About page says how to reach me.
What matters when you choose
- Two sensors in the base kit. With two sensors you measure at both bearings at the same time. Some instruments have two inputs but ship with one sensor, and the second is an option.
- Own screen or laptop. A built-in screen is handy on a ladder or a tractor. A laptop or tablet gives you a bigger screen and easier reports, but it's one more thing to carry and charge.
- Ruggedness and temperature. IP54 handles dust and splashes, IP65 is dust-tight and handles water jets. Check the operating temperature too if you work outdoors in winter.
- What's in the box. Tachometer, sensors, cables, scales for weighing weights, a case.
- Software features that save time: saved influence coefficients, split weights, a balance tolerance calculator.
- Price for what you actually need, with the second sensor, the software and a computer if it needs one.
The table
Speed ranges are the published tachometer ranges, not proof that every rotor in that range can be balanced. Prices are list prices in different currencies and VAT terms, with different kit contents, so compare full quotes before you decide.
| Instrument | Inputs / sensors supplied | Planes | Speed range, rpm (published) | Display | Protection | Public price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vibromera Balanset-1A | 2 / 2 | 1 or 2 | 100 to 100,000 | Windows laptop (not included) | IP54 | €1,975 excl. VAT (5 m cables), €2,025 (10 m) |
| Erbessd DigivibeMX M10, wired kit (GX400) | 4-channel box / 2 accelerometers + laser tacho | 1 or 2 | not on the listing | PC (not included) | not on the listing | $4,999.95, shipping calculated at checkout |
| CEMB N330 | 2 / 1, second sensor kit optional | 1 or 2 | 60 to 250,000 | own 4.3" screen | IP54 | €9,450, second sensor kit €910 (VAT not stated) |
| Schenck SmartBalancer 4 | 2 (up to 6 with paid upgrade) | 1 or 2 | 120 to 80,000 | own touchscreen | IP65 | no public price found |
| Fluke (Prüftechnik) VIBXPERT II Balancer | not on the product page | 1 or 2 | not on the product page | own screen | not on the product page | no public price found |
| VMI X BALANCER+ | 2 planes + tachometer | 1 or 2 | 30 to 180,000 | app on a PC or tablet | not on the product page | no public price found |
| Hofmann MiniBalancer MI 2500 | 2 | 1 or 2 | 180 to 60,000 | own 3.5" touchscreen | IP54 | no public price found |
Also worth knowing: Adash's VA5 Pro is a full four-channel vibration analyzer with balancing built in, a different class of tool.
Reading the table
- Balanset-1A has the lowest published price in this table, and the kit includes both sensors, the tachometer stand, scales and a case. The trade-offs, from its own manual: it needs a Windows laptop, the sensors are cabled, it's IP54 rather than IP65, it's rated for 5 to 50 °C (so not for frosty mornings without a warm cab or box), and the vibration range is 0.02 to 80 mm/s with accuracy of ±(0.1 + 10% of the reading) mm/s. Its frequency range is 5 to 550 Hz with up to 10% amplitude error, extendable to 1,000 Hz with up to 20%. It's a balancer with basic spectrum analysis, not a full analyzer.
- Erbessd M10 is the closest in concept: a PC-based kit with two accelerometers and a laser tachometer. Erbessd also sells wireless M10 kits for $5,999.95 (1-axis) and $6,699.95 (3-axis).
- CEMB N330 has its own screen and a much wider tachometer range. It has two inputs but comes with one accelerometer; the second, to measure both bearings at once, is a €910 option.
- Schenck, Fluke and Hofmann are established industrial brands with their own screens. None of them publishes a price online, so you ask the maker or a dealer for a quote.
- VMI X BALANCER+ has no screen of its own and runs from an app on a PC or tablet, like Balanset-1A uses a laptop.
When Balanset-1A is the right pick, and when it isn't
It's a good fit if you balance fans, mulchers, crushers, pumps or similar rotors in the field, you're fine working from a laptop, and price matters. It's also used as the measuring system for soft-bearing balancing machines.
Look at the others if you need an instrument with its own screen and battery for work where a laptop is awkward, IP65 protection, work below 5 °C, a full vibration analyzer for a plant-wide condition monitoring program, or a supplier with a local service network in your country.
